National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM)

The National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) was founded in 1966 and is financed entirely by voluntary contributions from the public and receives no government funding. This allows the society to pursue new and innovative services for patients with cancer.

NCSM is dedicated to preventing cancer, saving lives from cancer and improving the quality of life of those living with cancer through patient care and education.  It is involved in Public Awareness and Education Programmes. They give talks and organize seminars and lectures. They are also involved in Medical Education; providing education to graduates and undergraduates and inviting eminent specialists from overseas to update medical specialists here in Malaysia on the latest trends in the management of cancer patients.

A cancer diagnosis has the ability to turn our world upside down and make us fearful of the future. The impact is felt as patient, family member, friend or carer. NCSM Online aims to take that fear away by providing a quality cancer information platform, which empowers you to make better informed treatment and quality of life decisions. This will also allow you to resume and re-affirm control over your life during your journey with cancer.

NCSM is involved in Public Awareness and Education Programmes. This is done through giving talks and organising seminars and lectures for the public as well as the private sector.

Today, the Society has expanded its services to several aspects of cancer management, from detection to treatment and counseling. The Society has 5 centres in the KL area to serve the needs of a cancer patient. Apart from these, the Society also runs a counseling centre in Kuching, a mammography centre and a hospice in Penang. Since the Society is a charitable organization, its charges to patients are much cheaper compared to private hospitals.

"Swelling or enlargements of abnormal cells located within a tissue or organ are called tumours. Malignant tumours , or cancer, have the ability to invade normal cells and spread throughout the body." As such, malignant tumours can become life threatening. Unlike malignant tumours, benign tumours do not invade adjacent tissues and do not spread throughout the body. As such, benign tumours generally are not life threatening. However, cells in some benign tumours can acquire additional changes and become malignant or cancerous. Thus, tumours can be either benign or malignant, and some benign tumours can progress over time to become malignant tumours, or cancer.

The information contained in the following pages focus primarily on malignant tumours or cancers, as they are commonly known. The information provided is to help you understand how cancer is diagnosed and treated. There is additional information on support services and nutritional advice.

The website of The National Cancer Society is designed for educational purposes only and is not engaged in rendering medical advice or professional services. The information provided through this website should not be used for diagnosing or treating a health problem or a disease. It is not a substitute for professional care.
