The Malaysian Care story began in the late 1970's when a group of young and enthusiastic Christian individuals decided to share the love of God with those in need. These individuals became aware in a new way, the compassion of Jesus and the plight of some children in the Sungai Buloh Leprosy Settlement. These pioneers were Wong Kim Kong, Lim Heng Seng, Lim Wei Meng, Shirley Lee, Jack Cheah, Doreen Chan and Liew Chee Kien. After much prayer, this small group of Christians decided that action should be taken up to set up some social ministry work.

In October 1978, Peter and Betty Young returned from leave in India with a vision of the Malaysian Church doing more to help the desperate plight of many in the poorer countries of the world. God brought together the dreams and visions of these Christians and on 24th November 1978 the inaugural meeting of Malaysian Care was held at the Jalan Gasing Gospel Hall in Petaling Jaya. The meeting was held chaired by Wong Kim Kong who said that the aim of the proposed society is to encourage active Christian social work.

God raised Malaysian Care as a timely reminder to the Church in Malaysia to put faith into action. The first Board was elected on 24th November 1978, which comprised of Wong Kim Kong, Lim Heng Seng, Lim Wei Meng, Shirley Lee, Jack Cheah, Liew Chee Kien, Steven Chong, and Doreen Chan. The first Advisors were Mr. David Boler, Rev. Douglas Anderson and Mr. Timothy Phua. On 1st January 1980, Rev. Peter Young was appointed as the first Executive Director of Malaysian Care.

In April 1979 the Malaysian Care pioneers set up their first home, Rumah Care, a home for children whose parents were patients and residents of the Sungai Buluh Leprosarium. The first intake was 11 children which increased to 16 with 3 full-time staff namely, Ms. Elizabeth Cherian, Ms. Ong Ang Suan and Ms. Amy Foo.

But the needs of others like the mentally ill, drug dependents, prisoners and disabled persons also demanded our response. More homes, community services and programmes have been established over the years.

Malaysian Care Today

Malaysian Care today is an organization offering diversified services such as residential care and community services and is strongly committed to community development. Beginning with just a staff team of 5, today we have over 60 staff. Apart from direct services by staff and partners, we seek to inform, educate and encourage Christians to be involved with the poor and deprived. Malaysian Care also offers consultancy, partnerships and networking with Churches and groups to set up social caring ministries across Malaysia.
